A Beauty Shop and the Law of Attraction

A place of beauty

Jacqueline Brisdon is writing a thank-you note to her long-time staff member, Yukiko. They are celebrating three years together in a curious but wonderful workspace: a 700-square-foot addition off Brisdon’s North Vancouver home, called Serenity Studios.

Brisdon is has been an aesthetician for nearly three decades. Beauty by Jacqueline boasts over 400 clients, and a regular and varied staff who offer manis and pedis, guided meditation and massage or even Botox and cosmetic tattooing.

“It’s a lot of fun, it’s actually not work. I wake up every day looking forward to seeing what my day will bring,” the cheerful and charismatic Brisdon explains from her home office. “I don’t even advertise – it’s all word of mouth. Most of my clients now … it’s almost like girlfriends.”

Her life, family and vocation have come together as one, mainly due to the business being on her home premises. “I can choose my hours, my days, I can move things around when I need to,” she says. “I can put my family first and then my work. There’s a ton of flexibility.”

Nearly a decade ago, in cramped quarters, Brisdon wanted a place to call her own. “I was sharing a one-bathroom home that was 1,200 square feet with four other people and at that time had 160 clients,” she explains. “There were people pulling up in Jaguars and Mercedes, so obviously I was doing something right.”

Brisdon credits much of her success to a “mastermind” group of women who help each other with ideas, positive thinking and visualization techniques, based on the Law of Attraction (the central principle of the philosophy of The Secret). With experience all over the West Coast and a stint in Hawaii, learning and training in the ways of beauty, Brisdon had a vision for her new life and home. She had even included the workspace on her “vision board,” (a collage of images used by Law of Attraction proponents as a visualization tool to attract their wants and needs to them).

Create Your 2010 Vision Board

A vision board, also called a dream board, is a collage of words and pictures depicting your dreams and goals usually specific to one aspect of your life. Vision boards have received a lot of acclaim lately because of the world-famous book, “The Secret.” A vision board can set you on a path to achieving dreams and goals that may have previously eluded you. The key to a successful vision board is to post it in a place where you have to look at every day and it can serve as a constant reminder of what you are working toward.

Step 2

Take the pictures and words and start laying them out on your poster board or cardboard backing. Discard anything that may no longer fit or does not work. Move things around until they fit well and look right. This is also where you may want to organize your board. For instance, if you are working on your personal goals, you may place images of a house in one corner, money and credit cards in another corner, school or continuing education in another corner and then friends or hobbies in the last corner. Many people organize their boards by themes but there are others who like to place pictures all over the board rather than assigning corners. You may want to consider leaving some space to write words that you were not able to locate in the magazines and leaving a space in the center of the board. Step 3

Start gluing and taping. Turn over each picture or word and add glue or tape to secure it in place. Once you have finished getting everything into place, you can use a marker to draw words or images that you feel are important to your vision board.

Step 4

Place your picture in the middle of the board and make certain that it is a picture where you are smiling and happy. This is because your smiling, happy picture will be in the center of all of your dreams and goals.

Step 5

Hang your vision board in a place where you will see it every day. This should be an area in your house where you spend a lot of time or are constantly walking through. Some great locations include the back of your bedroom door, a home office, a refrigerator or a bulletin board. Looking at the board every day will cause you to always be aware of your dreams and goals.

Freedom of the mind: Magic of belief

Many people live dependant on various beliefs, this is neither good nor bad but is a limitation to a belief. We are all born free. We were made to believe many things owing to what we learned from childhood. We believe in certain things deeply which attracted us. This phenomenon is in general described as the law of attraction. Since what we believe gets attracted, we are tempted to hand over our freedom to a power.

Don’t lose your freedom
If you believe in a God, religion, power or place of worship please continue to do so. Obtain all assistance possible, get help and make life easier. However ensure that you do not hand over your freedom totally. Getting help from a power is one thing, while freedom of your mind is another. You need not let go of the freedom of your mind to get help from a power. You can maintain your freedom and still continue to get assistance from a God, deity, power or place of worship.

Some seeds grow
Seeds fall off a tree and give rise to more trees. Some seeds don’t grow while some grow to become small plants and die soon. Others grow into medium size trees. Occasionally they grow to be large trees that live over a hundred years. Similarly the human mind develops to varying degrees. Occasionally it develops to its full potential. Such minds are breathtaking, joy and bliss overflow and creative potential is abundant.

Limitations dissolve
Initially we discover the existence of freedom of the mind and limitations dissolve. Some people experience this occasionally and accept total responsibility for what happens. Those who are burdened with life’s problems may hand over responsibility to another person or power and would feel comfortable in doing so. A few who discover the wonder of total freedom dedicate their lives to be free. They accept responsibility of life and make use of the creativity that arises. They live illuminative lives.

Dependence disappears
Imagine eating an apple. Would you find the apple in your stomach the day after? If so, it has not digested and its nourishment has not got absorbed in your body. If the apple nourished you, it would remain an apple and would be part of your body. It would be indistinguishable from you. The need to repeat the past arises only when the past has not nourished you. Had it nourished you, you would not need to quote from it as it would have become part of you.

Wisdom flows
Once you realize this dependence ancient knowledge disappears. You appreciate ancient knowledge, allow it to nourish you, however you are careful not to hand over your freedom to ancient knowledge. The need to quote from ancient teachings then disappears and freedom to think dominates. Dependence of another’s teachings for your salvation becomes meaningless and endless knowledge and wisdom flows from your mind.

How to Use The Secret in Your Life, Starting Today

If you’ve seen or read The Secret, and feel like those scientists and free thinkers may be on to something, I believe you’re right. I’ve been a fan of the movies The Secret and What The Bleep Do We Know (Down the Rabbit Hole) since they first came out in 2006 and 2004, respectively. After years of studying the concept and digging deeper, I feel I have a deeper understanding of how to successfully incorporate The Secret, or the law of attraction, into your life.

One time, and only once, I went to an online forum that had a section dedicated to The Secret and how to apply the law of attraction in your life. At first I was interested in meeting like-minded people online, but was instead saddened at what I found. 99.9% of the people in the forum were sure the law of attraction was the answer to their life’s prayer, which was to find a way to sit on the couch and wish for money to drop into their mailbox every day. Almost every single user was focused on money, money, and more wealth. Whether or not the secret was truly hidden from lay-people for hundreds of years, thanks to that forum I now understand why it could have been reserved for the intellectually adept - I don’t believe it’s meant or able to work in selfish, greedy, mental environments.

The secret isn’t just about wishing for money folks, so if that’s what you’ve been doing and wonder why you’ve run into failure, all I can say is yer doin’ it wrong [sic]. There is a fundamental difference between greed and wanting good things to come into your life via the law of attraction. That difference is balance combined with a good attitude. The secret must be used in every aspect of the way you think, and it must come in the way of genuine positive thoughts. It’s not easy. Constantly finding the positive in bad situations takes time, patience, and perhaps a certain type of personality or inborn awareness of the world around you. It might not work for everyone, but it is designed to work with anyone.
