Nichols: Achieve your goals ‘no matter what’

You’ve set goals for yourself, only to have them deferred, stomped on or watered down. You’ve looked for others to bring you through without realizing the onus is on you. Developing a “no matter what” mindset is the key to “non-negotiable” goals, according to life coach and best-selling author Lisa Nichols.

Nichols remembered when all her goals were negotiable, starting back in her high school years. She learned in her teen years to love herself first, realize that mistakes would be made, but to forgive herself.

As she matured and began to gain more control of her life, a “no matter what” mindset was born, she said, referring to the title of her recently released book.

“It was understanding what my life looked like when all my goals were negotiable, when all my goals were optional. It was recognizing how I felt when I sat in the space of worry, doubt, victim and concern. It didn’t feel good and I wasn’t ready to commit a lifetime to that experience,” Nichols told the Defender.

Nichols, the founder of Motivating the Masses and CEO of Motivating the Teen Spirit, LLC, is described by her peers as “The Breakthrough Specialist.” She regularly holds transformational workshops that has reached more than one million adults and thousands of teens. She has appeared on various television shows, including The Oprah Winfrey Show, Extra, Larry King Live, and Starting Over, and has penned two Chicken Soup for the Soul books.

In December she will spread more of her motivational advice on the Women Entertainment cable channel. Her new weekly, yet-to-be titled reality-based show will center around helping women turn a breakdown into a breakthrough. Several episodes have already been shot, she said.

“Most of us don’t realize that we’ve unconsciously allowed our goals to be negotiable and optional. A ‘no matter what’ mindset means you’ve taken every other option off the table except hitting the mark. When you take on that mindset, you actually begin to pick up speed, you move with more velocity. You move with more certainty and more aggression. It’s a positive aggression and you become a force of nature to be reckoned with,” said Nichols.

Always following God is key, however, realizing the power you possess and knowing you are the answer to your problems is essential to any breakthrough, the life coach said, referencing an “ah-ha” moment in her life.

“Each time I looked at my problems, I looked for the answer and realized that I was my answer. When I learned how to love Lisa, treat Lisa and set boundaries and ask for what I need, all of a sudden I became an example. I became a permission slip for other girls to do it. I found my own rhythm, and when I did I felt better as a teenager and as a woman,” she said.

“My rhythm was mine and it was perfect. That was a huge liberation for me. I had to give myself permission to make mistakes and to forgive myself quicker. That was key for me. I wasn’t going to hold myself hostage to guilt, shame, blame and regret. That could last a lifetime. I had to be willing to give myself a lifetime of something better than that,” said Nichols.

Nichols will host a workshop in Chicago Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Marriott hotel near Midway Airport, 6520 S. Cicero Ave.

Why strange things happen in our life

By Jaime Licauco

REGULAR reader Lito sought answers to some puzzling events he couldn’t explain. First, his youngest son damaged the fender of their van while getting out of the garage.

He wished another vehicle would hit the same fender so it could be repaired at some other person’s expense. After a few months, his other son hit another van in their subdivision and he ended up paying double.

Second, a friend invited him to Tagaytay for a birthday party. He didn’t feel like going, so he thought he would make an excuse by saying he was sick or an accident happened that day. True enough, on the way home from buying a gift for the friend, a 10-year-old boy suddenly crossed the street, hit the side of his car and he had to be hospitalized. He paid for the hospitalization of the boy.

The third incident happened again to his youngest son. He hit this time a passenger jeepney and damage to their vehicle was substantial. His son suffered whiplash injury and was paralyzed. This time he did not wish an accident to happen, but it did. He asked why.

Here are my replies to your questions:

Our thoughts are more powerful than we think without our realizing it. Thoughts become physical realities after a while.

There are two hidden laws of nature that are pertinent to your question:

1. The Law of Affirmation or Suggestion, which says “What you suggest or affirm in your mind manifests in physical reality.

2. The Law of Attraction which says, “Like attracts like on the mental and spiritual plane.”

Conscious vs subconscious

How come that even if you are not thinking of an accident, even if you don’t want it to happen, it still happens?

I believe this may be due to a conflict between our conscious and subconscious minds. Our conscious mind does not want it to happen, but our subconscious mind sees it otherwise. There is a conflict between the conscious and the subconscious mind. And when there’s a conflict between the two, the subconscious mind always wins, unless it has been programmed to obey the conscious mind. That’s the reason we have always been admonished or advised to think positive thoughts all the time.

The very popular book written by Rhonda Byrne called “The Secret” explains the mechanics or workings of this law in our everyday life. The book sold over a million copies during the first three months it came off the press.

Unfortunately, the book only dealt with how to get material possessions through the law of affirmation and attraction. It did not deal with the other two equally important hidden laws of nature, namely the Law of Compensation, which says “Whatever you do will come back to you,” and the Law of Causality, which says, “Nothing happens by accident, everything has a cause.”

Understanding of these four hidden laws of nature will help us to understand better why things happen the way they do in our life.

CELEBRITIES always seem to be going on about The Secret, the highly popular book and movie which reveal the way to have it all.

Based on the law of attraction which states you get what you focus on, many A-Listers, including hunky Scots actor Gerald Butler, say The Secret has helped them live the life of their dreams.

But at the heart of The Secret lies the simple principle that in order to feel good about ourselves and our lives, we have to relearn how to let go of emotions in the same way we did when we were children.

And the secret behind that is … Read on.

Land Your Dream Job in Three Steps with Positive Thinking Power

October 23, 2008 by cyf

How would you like to get your dream job easily and effortlessly, without the grind, grief and grumbles of the typical job hunt?

Now, if you prefer to spend weeks, months or years trying to get hired, sending out waves of resumes with little or no response, networking like crazy in the hopes of making some sort of useful connection, and going on frustrating, pointless interviews, don’t read any further, because this article isn’t for you.

And if you’re the type who believes that you make things happen only as a result of hard work, determination, perseverance and ‘luck,’ or you’re a person who thinks rigidly and is unwilling to open your mind to new ideas, stop right here because this article may be too ‘touchy-feely’ for you.

This article is for people who are ready to try something different and something that really does work, regardless of how strange it may first appear to be.

I know it works because I’ve gotten every job I ever wanted, even if I didn’t have the qualifications, didn’t have any experience, didn’t know anyone on the inside, and regardless of what was happening with the economy, how big the company was or how tough the competition was.

I am using it now as a business owner to attract new business, as a homeowner to attract the money to pay my bills, and as a Baby Boomer with a body that occasionally reminds me that I’m not 17 anymore.

And when I was 17, I used it to get into the college of my choice when I didn’t have the grades or SAT scores, didn’t know anyone on the faculty or administration, wasn’t a minority or foreign student, didn’t have a scholarship or grant, or any kind of ‘in’ whatsoever.

What I used was the Law of Attraction, which you might have heard of as “The Secret,” thanks to the DVD and book of the same name. The Law of Attraction is the most powerful law in the universe, and it states that you attract anything you focus on through your thoughts, feelings and beliefs – whether you’re aware of them or not and whether you actually want them or not.

Here are some of the many ways the Law of Attraction has been expressed:

“Like attracts like.”
“Ask and it shall be given to you; seek and you shall find; knock and it shall be opened to you.”
“As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.”
“It is done unto you as you believe.”
“For whoever have, to him more shall be given, and he who does not have, even that which he has will be taken from him.”
“Thoughts are things.”
Yes, you can literally attract anything through your thoughts, including your dream job.

Here’s how:

  • Know What You Want
  • Create a mental video of yourself at work in your dream job: What are you doing, wearing or reading?
  • What does your workplace look like? How much money are you making? What is your work schedule? Who are your co-workers? How do you feel doing this work in this environment with these people?

Replay this mental video several times a day, and especially right before you go to sleep, until your dream job shows up. Use affirmations and visualization to convince your mind that your dream job is already yours, even if you can’t yet see it, haven’t a clue how it will come to you or if it seems impossible.

Be Who You Are

The fastest way to manifest your dream job is to think, speak and act as if you already have it, so do the things that a person who has that job would do:

Have a business card printed specifying the kind of work you see yourself doing.
Attend trade functions and mingle with your peers.
Take classes and seminars and read industry publications.
Keep your mind filled with thoughts of how great it is to do the work you love.
Never allow fear, doubt, misgivings or anyone else’s opinions to sway you from your conviction that what you want is already yours. Negative thoughts will block or delay your ‘good’ from coming to you.

Do What Feels Right

When you embrace the ‘knowing’ and embody the ‘being-ness’ of having that job, you’ll be intuitively guided to take the most appropriate actions towards it, and you’ll find you won’t have to do very much at all, and whatever you do will be exceptionally productive.

You can forget the job boards, the interviews that waste your time and the months of worrying because here is where the coincidences, synchronicities and ‘luck’ occur:

  • You’ll ‘happen’ to be in the right place at the right time.
  • By ‘accident,’ you’ll run into the very person who you’ve been trying to reach.
  • You’ll feel guided to call one particular person who, it turns out, was looking for someone just like you right now.
That golden opportunity, or the money or resources you needed to accomplish your goal will simply be there.
  • It may seem like a miracle, but it’s really not. This is just the Law of Attraction ‘demonstrating’ your belief that you have that dream job! Since “it is done unto you as you believe,” if you really believe that dream job is yours, it will be.

You attract whatever you focus on, so focus only on what you want, not on what you don’t want. Either way, it’s already on its way to you. And so it is.
